I left the Buckatabon Resort and Campground with all my gadgets fully charged and water tank filled with delicious lake water. This truly is a kid's paradise and safe enough for parents to just let kids roam and play together in packs. My neighbor said his kids lasted just three days they were so exhausted.
Headed for the 11 o'clock mass at Saint Peter the Fisherman
Church in Eagle River. It was a beautiful church with a rich history.
I then set out to try to find the chicken and dumpling restaurant that I thought was in Eagle River that was my dad's favorite. I explored all of Main Street thankful that all the homemade fudge, taffy, peanut brittle and ice cream stores all said 'no pets allowed'. I never did find the dumpling place but landed at" the Daily Grind" which served up a incredible avocado sourbread toast with egg and onions in such a beautiful and tasty presentation it rivals Swedish open faced sandwiches. I highly recommend it if you're ever in the area.
Tim sent me the coordinates of what he thought was about where the old Kressin resort was on upper Buckatabon Lake. It seemed slightly familiar so I found a spot to pull off the road and then Sheba and I set out to see if we could find the right lot. We finally ran across a couple who although new to the area thought they knew of a place with four little cabins down close to the water just a few blocks further up the road. This sounded so promising we got back to the car and drove on down the road and what to my wondering eyes should appear but a street sign that actually said Kressins Lakeview Dr.
3651 Conover was on the mailbox. All the neighbors had 6000 numbers so I had to assume this one had been there a long time. As I drove down the long drive way it was all there just as I had remembered it . All freshly manicured, all the cabins, fish cleaning shack and the main house . No one was home but the windows were open so I had hopes that they were not far .I roamed around the "Lakeside cabin"(my father's for probably 25 years} was still there and open so I took the liberty of going in. Most of it looked just like when Dad would fry up the 40 bluegills we caught that morning and cleaned for two hours and then ate for lunch. Two bites per fish, but his precision portions of salt, pepper and flour made it all worthwhile. Now the "fruit soup" was another matter. A variety of dried fruits cooked up with tapioca to make a stew like concoction. The prunes kept us regular but I preferred the fish despite the ever present bones.
Before I got shot for trespassing I thought I'd better get out of there. I went back to the neighbors to to tell them I found it and thank them for their help. They didnt know of any phone directory but the people at Baures Bar had been there forever and they might know. So off we went to the bar. Yes!!! Mr. Kressin's daughter,Virginia, still owned it and was in the process of fixing it up to rent out the cabins again! No, he didn't know how to contact her. So I got a bowl of their homemade chicken and dumpling soup and a glass of that good local dark beer.
After a bit a group came and sat next to me at the bar." Hey, don't you know Virginia Kressin",the bartender asked them. Sure do, she's a good friend!! BINGO and he had her phone number too. She had no voice mail set up ,but you can bet I'll call tomorrow.
They then told me of a near by campground in woods so here I am again saying my prayers and good night !
